Diagnostics of boredom
मी: तसं नाही रे, i will still b njoying what i will b doing, पण routine झालं कि bore होतं, म्हणजे सारखा change हवासा वाटतो. आता change म्हणुन काहीतरी वेगळं , म्हणजे bungee jumping सुरू केलं, njoyed it for a while, मग त्याचं routine झालं म्हणुन मग जपानी संस्क्रुतीत चहाचे महत्व hehe या विषयावर research केला, तेही bore झालं मग नवीन काहितरी, हे एक pattern झालं तर bore होईल.
तो: हं म्हणजे no sense of progress.
तो: हं nothing to be worried about, असं होउ शकतं, we r changing with time, we can start liking different things, our tastes may change with time.
तो: searching searching च, in the hopes कि काहितरी long lasting सापडेल. but here we are not talking of finding something to do per say. we r trying to find out why do we do something in the first place? ते कळलं कि finally काय हवंय हे कळेल आणि मग u will do things to reach there and then there will be a sense of progress.

Good post, Nivedita
boredom does not necessarily mean lazyness. In fact most creative people have found their masterpieces out of utter boredom. Aparna Sen wrote the story of 36 chouringhee lane when she had nothing to do. As a student, when everything other than studies is over, then the academic concepts are vivid with understanding, out of post boredom studies. marriage is not the solution for boredom. It will only change the face of boredom. Try something which does not compel you to follow a routine, without falling prey to the new routine of changeover, as you have emphasized. It could be a passionate writing spree coupled with free touring of the places, with a belief that there's someone to fall back upon return. You sound to me like Saaniya, who has been doing the same thing all these years. Hats off to you.

i see an analogy with hunger. When the body uses up its energy we feel hungry and eat. But we can't eat a lot once and hope that it lasts a lifetime. likewise we are likely to get bored periodically, no matter what we do. The key is to take this as an indication and change. doesn't have to be a big chance everytime, but change never the less. boredom simply says "I have had enough of this, now go get a new one"
Ofcourse there is the solution that ratnadeep has suggested. And it works. why? now the mindless can't get bored, can they?
Hemant,
First of all thanks for your generous compliments.
Essentially when we say, travel, what we are saying here is gather more information, this may throw some more light onto what our needs are and consequently what the goals are and hence the direction to follow. And a sense of progress is a must to feel alive, which again is a must if you don’t want to feel bored (boredom = feeling stagnated or more harshly said dead).
Regarding Ratnadeep’s comments about marriage, it will definitely relieve the boredom for a while; any new thing would do that. Additionally it would add to your resources (new thoughts/ideas of the spouse) to fight boredom, but nothing more.
Siddarth,
I don’t agree with your analogy to hunger. As the great Matrix says, there are levels of survival. Hunger is more to do with the animal definition of survival. While what we do for relieving our boredom, pertains more to the human (the supposed intelligent/social species) kind of definition. So the analogy does not fit. Doing a different thing every time may or may not give me a sense of purpose and a sense of progress, which for some unknown reason is essential for my survival (of second type).
that is why I used the word 'analogy' not 'congruence'. The analogy fits in the sense that there can't be a permanant solution to boredom. At least for aimless people like us. As far as the sense of progress goes, life is not abt walking a predefined path. If we consider progress as a vector its direction is generally undefined. But what can give us the 'sense' of progress is its magnitude. When you are bored u have essentially lost momentum and only a change can speed u up again. Only problem is you are afriad to let go of you cozy comfortable, secure, blah blah life for a more uncertain one. So you try to find pseudo changes that fool you into thinking you are doing something different. Easiest way of knowing wheather the change is pseudo or real is that after the change if you still feel 'bored' the change was pseudo. They say to cannot explore new lands till you are afriad to lose sight of the shore. In conclusion, if you are a exploror at heart, learn to lose sight of the shore, otherwise you will suffocate till you die. If you are not a exploror, stay away from water.
I agree with your definitions of psuedo change and real change. But I think we dont have to remain aimless forever, probably the real changes that we make happen may give us some lasting goals.
This discussion reminds me of Theodore Roetheke's poetry "The Waking"
Boredome is good for a while as it makes you happier when you get out of it...its natural...The most important is to feel the state of being bored and need to getting out of that state. Thats the difference between sensetivity and inertness...
thats is one nice piece of poetry
nice one nive.
being bored is not so bad at times.
Its probably a signal to give rest to that background cpu, even if you are doing something you like.
Kadhi-kadhi kahitari purNa paNe nirarthak (mhanJe, aplyala ervi nirarthak vatNara)karNe, yane pan ek change milto, that helps us get back with some new thought.
Ani ayushyat aplyala kahi fixed aim asayla hava ani tyachya drushtini apaN contribute kela pahije asa kahi nahi. Its the process you can enjoy rather than the result na.
In the process, kuthetari kahitari jar asa sapadla ki jyala apan ayushyacha aim mhaNu shaklo tar changlach ahe :)
@ Boka,
Very nicely put!
@ Nishi,
Thanks for the compliment!
May be what you are saying is true, if we find something exotic accedentally, it will indeed be nice, but it would be a lot of fun and more safe to have some definite aim to pursue.. just in case you don't find that accidental exotic thing ;)
