The analogy fits in the sense that there can't be a permanant solution to boredom. At least for aimless people like us. As far as the sense of progress goes, life is not abt walking a predefined path. If we consider progress as a vector its direction is generally undefined. But what can give us the 'sense' of progress is its magnitude. When you are bored u have essentially lost momentum and only a change can speed u up again. Only problem is you are afriad to let go of you cozy comfortable, secure, blah blah life for a more uncertain one. So you try to find pseudo changes that fool you into thinking you are doing something different. Easiest way of knowing wheather the change is pseudo or real is that after the change if you still feel 'bored' the change was pseudo. They say to cannot explore new lands till you are afriad to lose sight of the shore. In conclusion, if you are a exploror at heart, learn to lose sight of the shore, otherwise you will suffocate till you die. If you are not a exploror, stay away from water.

Hemant, First of all thanks for your generous comp...

Hemant,
First of all thanks for your generous compliments.
Essentially when we say, travel, what we are saying here is gather more information, this may throw some more light onto what our needs are and consequently what the goals are and hence the direction to follow. And a sense of progress is a must to feel alive, which again is a must if you don’t want to feel bored (boredom = feeling stagnated or more harshly said dead).
Regarding Ratnadeep’s comments about marriage, it will definitely relieve the boredom for a while; any new thing would do that. Additionally it would add to your resources (new thoughts/ideas of the spouse) to fight boredom, but nothing more.

Siddarth,
I don’t agree with your analogy to hunger. As the great Matrix says, there are levels of survival. Hunger is more to do with the animal definition of survival. While what we do for relieving our boredom, pertains more to the human (the supposed intelligent/social species) kind of definition. So the analogy does not fit. Doing a different thing every time may or may not give me a sense of purpose and a sense of progress, which for some unknown reason is essential for my survival (of second type).

i see an analogy with hunger. But we can't eat a lot once and hope that it lasts a lifetime. likewise we are likely to get bored periodically, no matter what we do. The key is to take this as an indication and change. doesn't have to be a big chance everytime, but change never the less. boredom simply says "I have had enough of this, now go get a new one"
Ofcourse there is the solution that ratnadeep has suggested.
