I completely agree with your first point. Mohan's decision is indeed a big and a difficult one and also admirable.

Regarding the second portion about sacrifices.. all these days after putting up this post, I have started thinking it might not be accurate to call these decisions as sacrifices. Human mind is very complex and it gets its satisfactions through situations which may not obviously look very comfortable. In case of Mohan, leaving a rich lifestyle and living in a village. But the feeling of being there in his own country and working directly for the betterment of his people holds sufficient attraction for him to make this decision. So his decision is certainly patriotic and a very commendable one but should we call it a sacrifice? I am not sure.. in fact I wonder if any sacrifices are sacrifices at all!

Driven by circumstances or despite having alternatives, Geeta's choice to dedicate to welfare and upbringing of people surely commands admiration, but it does not dwarf Mohan's sacrifice. Working for Nasa can also be seen as a way to work for welfare of mankind. Going to US after having decided to come back after spending a few years and then actually sticking to your decision - probably is relatively easy to execute. But with no plan to come back and being engrossed and well settled in a very comfortable, rich lifestyle with a dream job at Nasa, Mohan is suddenly awakened one fine day about the difference he can make in lives of people of a poor village in his country. He is so moved by this *new* option that he pursues it by giving up other luring and enticing options he is enjoying. I think that is not an easy thing to do.

Choosing an option without having circumstantial pressures does not necessary mean that its not a sacrifice. On the contrary it is. What was the need for Valabhai Patel to give up his extremely sucessful life of a barister and throw himself into freedom struggle along side Gandhiji ? There were no circumstantial pressures on him. But Gandhiji's selfless devotion (he used to make fun of Gandhiji earlier) to people and to his country for a cause had such an eye opening effect on him that he gave up all materialistic pleasures and devoted himself to India from then on. Won't you call this a sacrifice ?

One of the most attractive style of writing I have seen after I started reading blogs.

About Swades:
She or He never knew that they are going to come so close or made for each other before they met. So Love is out of question while discussing who sacrificed for/what.

This comment cannot deny that she din't had any alternatives for future. She had actually. She could have married a handsome/salaried guy (as it was in movie too) and lived her life happily in delhi or so.

And Hero too:
"मी : US चं glamor नाही रे. But yes he is leaving nasa. हे भारी आहे."

US ch glamor nahi kas? and still if not glamor, leaving the lifestyle, comfort and money you to get there to come back to live in scrap village to improve society is a big thing.

So in my point of view...nobody is individually better than counterpart. Rather both are equally commited(for social work ;-)) and inspiring for those who want to throw themselves in social work if any.

Ratnadeep has mentioned an interesting point. May be she is a great woman and has made a great decision, or may be the necessity of a virtuous decision has weighed her down. If she does not have a thought out value system, her staying may be beneficial for the country (in a limited sense) but not for herself. In the light of her person (just a conjecture, the movie doesn't tell much), it would not matter really what decision she made if its not her own.

your angle is positively an eye opener. Gayatri joshi's character is now put much above shahrukh's one. Awaiting for hero is now secondary. Geeta sounds more authentic. As for siddhya's comment, on screen even achchoot kanya was glamorous devika rani an era ago. A visual medium has to put up glamour and shine to make the audience sustain the message for almost 3 hours.

The real test of Geeta was not when she joined the school. the real test was when Mohan asked her whether she is ready to migrate to US.

मोहन कडे एका बाजुला भौतिक सुखं होती. तर दुसरीकडे प्रेम आणि patriotism.

गीता कडे एका बाजुला patriotism होतं तर दुसरीकडे प्रेम आणि भौतिक सुखं.

While Geeta abandoned love and material things for her country. Mohan had to give up material things for the love and the country.

There were more incentives for Mohan than Geeta.

Hence Proved.

as usual a thought provoking article from you. What I wonder however is that, why it should be that the heroine is always made to wait for the hero? Suppose the roles are reversed and it's the heroine who wants to return from nasa, will the hero wait so patiently? Why is it that the heroine is taken for granted? Again, those who are doing selfless work in india by their choice are considered inferior to those who have come back from u.s of a. Frankly, I am more impressed by the heroine as she is trying to change the system despite being a part of the system which is indeed very difficult to practice.
